Narrative:
Descending into ZMA, aircraft X was cleared from FL370 to FL270. I was flying the aircraft and listening to the ATIS. The first officer who was talking to ZMA acknowledged the clearance and set FL270 in the altitude select. Upon descending through FL280, ZMA called and said 'aircraft X, maintain FL270. You were assigned to maintain FL290.' we were then switched to another frequency. Both the first officer and I had thought we were cleared to FL270 but apparently we were only cleared to FL290.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ARTCC CLAIMS ALT ASSIGNMENT THAT WAS PREVIOUSLY READBACK BY THE FLT CREW WAS NOT THE ACTUAL ASSIGNMENT.
Narrative: DSNDING INTO ZMA, ACFT X WAS CLRED FROM FL370 TO FL270. I WAS FLYING THE ACFT AND LISTENING TO THE ATIS. THE FO WHO WAS TALKING TO ZMA ACKNOWLEDGED THE CLRNC AND SET FL270 IN THE ALT SELECT. UPON DSNDING THROUGH FL280, ZMA CALLED AND SAID 'ACFT X, MAINTAIN FL270. YOU WERE ASSIGNED TO MAINTAIN FL290.' WE WERE THEN SWITCHED TO ANOTHER FREQ. BOTH THE FO AND I HAD THOUGHT WE WERE CLRED TO FL270 BUT APPARENTLY WE WERE ONLY CLRED TO FL290.
