En route to smf I was flying. The captain was working radios. We were cruising at FL370. ZOA called and said to descend to what we thought was FL230. Captain read back FL230. As we were passing through FL330, ZOA said 'air carrier X say altitude.' captain said 'FL310 for FL230.' ZOA said 'I gave you FL330.' captain said 'I read back FL230.' ZOA said 'descend to FL240.' captain read back 'FL240.' captain asked ZOA if we needed to call. Center said 'that will not be necessary.'
