Narrative:
We took off from addison airport at XC30 on an IFR flight to redbird airport to practice instrument approachs. After 2 ILS approachs at redbird, we headed back to addison airport. We were being radar vectored for the ILS runway 15 to addison. We were practicing simulated vacuum failure (partial panel). Upon climbing to 4000 ft MSL, we were in IMC. The student was using the magnetic compass to maintain heading. The magnetic compass suddenly swung erratically. The student got disoriented and we entered an unusual attitude. We recovered from the unusual attitude. The controller told us to maintain our assigned heading. We requested to descend to 3000 ft MSL. We completed the ILS runway 15 approach and landed at addison airport.

Title: A C172 TRAINING FLT LOSES CTL OF ALT AND HDG WHEN THE 2 PLTS SUFFER VERTIGO DURING AN ATTEMPT AT PARTIAL PANEL FLYING NEAR ADS, TX.
Narrative: WE TOOK OFF FROM ADDISON ARPT AT XC30 ON AN IFR FLT TO REDBIRD ARPT TO PRACTICE INST APCHS. AFTER 2 ILS APCHS AT REDBIRD, WE HEADED BACK TO ADDISON ARPT. WE WERE BEING RADAR VECTORED FOR THE ILS RWY 15 TO ADDISON. WE WERE PRACTICING SIMULATED VACUUM FAILURE (PARTIAL PANEL). UPON CLBING TO 4000 FT MSL, WE WERE IN IMC. THE STUDENT WAS USING THE MAGNETIC COMPASS TO MAINTAIN HDG. THE MAGNETIC COMPASS SUDDENLY SWUNG ERRATICALLY. THE STUDENT GOT DISORIENTED AND WE ENTERED AN UNUSUAL ATTITUDE. WE RECOVERED FROM THE UNUSUAL ATTITUDE. THE CTLR TOLD US TO MAINTAIN OUR ASSIGNED HDG. WE REQUESTED TO DSND TO 3000 FT MSL. WE COMPLETED THE ILS RWY 15 APCH AND LANDED AT ADDISON ARPT.
