Narrative:
While descending from 16000 ft MSL to 12000 ft MSL, both the pilot and copilot became distraction by a malfunction in navigation equipment. Because of the distraction, we inadvertently descended below the assigned altitude by 400 ft. Immediate corrective action was taken. It is imperative that one pilot always maintain situational awareness.

Title: FC8 CARGO CREW OVERSHOOTS THEIR ASSIGNED ALT IN DSCNT WHEN DISTR WITH A NAV SYS PROB NEAR CCC VOR, NY.
Narrative: WHILE DSNDING FROM 16000 FT MSL TO 12000 FT MSL, BOTH THE PLT AND COPLT BECAME DISTR BY A MALFUNCTION IN NAV EQUIP. BECAUSE OF THE DISTR, WE INADVERTENTLY DSNDED BELOW THE ASSIGNED ALT BY 400 FT. IMMEDIATE CORRECTIVE ACTION WAS TAKEN. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT ONE PLT ALWAYS MAINTAIN SITUATIONAL AWARENESS.
