Narrative:
Recorded destination airport ATIS and then set PNF altimeter to landing field setting (on PNF side only). Intended to set standby altimeter, not primary altimeter. Although not an far violation, bad habit pattern of setting standby altimeter when ATIS copied could have led to an inappropriate leveloff if cleared to level at flight level versus altitude during descent.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PNF SET HIS ALTIMETER TO QNH ABOVE FL180 WHEN HE INTENDED TO PUT THE QNH SETTING IN THE STANDBY ALTIMETER AS A REMINDER AFTER COPYING THE ATIS.
Narrative: RECORDED DEST ARPT ATIS AND THEN SET PNF ALTIMETER TO LNDG FIELD SETTING (ON PNF SIDE ONLY). INTENDED TO SET STANDBY ALTIMETER, NOT PRIMARY ALTIMETER. ALTHOUGH NOT AN FAR VIOLATION, BAD HABIT PATTERN OF SETTING STANDBY ALTIMETER WHEN ATIS COPIED COULD HAVE LED TO AN INAPPROPRIATE LEVELOFF IF CLRED TO LEVEL AT FLT LEVEL VERSUS ALT DURING DSCNT.
