Narrative:
As first officer, I obtained our IFR clearance and requested runway 36 for departure. We were told to 'taxi to runway 36' even though runway 18 and 21 were in use. I programmed the FMS (head's down operation) as the captain taxied from the ramp to taxiway 'east' and to runway 36. When I look up, we were on runway 36. I told the captain we were to taxi to runway 36, not position and hold runway 36. His response was 'oh' and he turned around to exit the runway. Tower called and said, 'you went to far,' I responded 'yes, we did, sorry.' tower responded, 'position and hold runway 36.' when we were told to contact departure I replied 'contact departure , sorry about that.' tower responded, 'no problem, have a safe flight.' if I would have been watching outside, this could have been prevented. However, the captain was familiar with the airport.
