Narrative:

Practicing helicopter automatic rotations and stuck pedal procedures in rectangular pattern over former el toro military airfield (el toro now closed and vacant, no people or activity on field). After approximately 1 hour in pattern, vehicle (possibly security) drove onto runway. We spotted vehicle when we were on approximately 1/4 mi final at 1000 ft. Upon seeing vehicle, discontinued approach and departed pattern to the southeast. As a result of seeing vehicle, pilots unsure if practice automatic rotations allowed or prohibited over this closed field. Need to check AFD or call FSS to find answer.
