Narrative:
We pushed back from gate at rdu and were clear of taxiway a. When we were ready for taxi, we could not get a radio call in, as ground control was busy. Company landed on runway 5R and was holding short of taxiway a on taxiway C. 2 light aircraft were holding on taxiway D short of taxiway a. Ground cleared company to the gate, which we had blocked, when a B727 (which was nebound on taxiway a) went by. The B727 went by, and since company could not get to the gate until we moved, I felt that ground would want us to head southwest on taxiway a since he had already cleared company to our gate. As I started to move our aircraft, my first officer reminded me that we were not cleared onto taxiway a. I concurred and felt that I could still move clear of the gate and remain clear of taxiway a. Ground control called and advised that we were not cleared onto taxiway a. Replied 'that is correct, we are not cleared onto taxiway a.' ground then gave us taxi instructions to runway 5L. It is my belief that we remained clear of taxiway a, as that was my intention. However, in the future at rdu, I plan on remaining stationary until taxi instructions are received.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B737 MOVES FORWARD TO ALLOW COMPANY ACCESS TO THE GATE TO WHICH CLRED AND IS CHALLENGED BY RDU GND CTL.
Narrative: WE PUSHED BACK FROM GATE AT RDU AND WERE CLR OF TXWY A. WHEN WE WERE READY FOR TAXI, WE COULD NOT GET A RADIO CALL IN, AS GND CTL WAS BUSY. COMPANY LANDED ON RWY 5R AND WAS HOLDING SHORT OF TXWY A ON TXWY C. 2 LIGHT ACFT WERE HOLDING ON TXWY D SHORT OF TXWY A. GND CLRED COMPANY TO THE GATE, WHICH WE HAD BLOCKED, WHEN A B727 (WHICH WAS NEBOUND ON TXWY A) WENT BY. THE B727 WENT BY, AND SINCE COMPANY COULD NOT GET TO THE GATE UNTIL WE MOVED, I FELT THAT GND WOULD WANT US TO HEAD SW ON TXWY A SINCE HE HAD ALREADY CLRED COMPANY TO OUR GATE. AS I STARTED TO MOVE OUR ACFT, MY FO REMINDED ME THAT WE WERE NOT CLRED ONTO TXWY A. I CONCURRED AND FELT THAT I COULD STILL MOVE CLR OF THE GATE AND REMAIN CLR OF TXWY A. GND CTL CALLED AND ADVISED THAT WE WERE NOT CLRED ONTO TXWY A. REPLIED 'THAT IS CORRECT, WE ARE NOT CLRED ONTO TXWY A.' GND THEN GAVE US TAXI INSTRUCTIONS TO RWY 5L. IT IS MY BELIEF THAT WE REMAINED CLR OF TXWY A, AS THAT WAS MY INTENTION. HOWEVER, IN THE FUTURE AT RDU, I PLAN ON REMAINING STATIONARY UNTIL TAXI INSTRUCTIONS ARE RECEIVED.
