Narrative:
Nassau ground control told me to taxi to the holding point of runway 14 at taxiway. The call sign I was using was 'xyz.' there was a cessna 400 series aircraft ahead of me. Nassau called xyz to follow the cessna and cross runway 14. I did not reply to this and then called ground control about the inaccurate call sign. After the third attempt, nassau ground called back and said 'xyz is cleared to cross runway 14.' when I was on the runway during crossing, nassau ground told me to 'hold short.' I told ground I was on the runway and I did not want to stop on the active runway. At the end of runway 14, I could see a single engine on the wy. I could not tell he was on his takeoff roll until I had cleared runway 14. Had I stopped when nassau told me to, I would have been on the runway with the single engine departing over the top of me. Nassau called me back and asked if I had heard the first attempt when they asked me to follow the cessna and cross runway 14. I said yes, but it was the wrong call sign, and was given permission to cross runway 14 with the correct call sign xyz.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: MERLIN IV PLT TOOK EVASIVE ACTION TO CONTINUE ACROSS THE ACTIVE RWY AFTER NOTICING A SINGLE ENG ACFT ON TKOF ROLL. MEANTIME, TWR CTLR REQUESTED THAT HE HOLD SHORT FOR THE ACFT ON TKOF. THE MERLIN PLT DID NOT RESPOND TO TWR CLRNC TO FOLLOW A CESSNA 400 TYPE ACROSS THE RWY ORIGINALLY SINCE THE TWR CTLR USED THE WRONG CALL SIGN.
Narrative: NASSAU GND CTL TOLD ME TO TAXI TO THE HOLDING POINT OF RWY 14 AT TXWY. THE CALL SIGN I WAS USING WAS 'XYZ.' THERE WAS A CESSNA 400 SERIES ACFT AHEAD OF ME. NASSAU CALLED XYZ TO FOLLOW THE CESSNA AND CROSS RWY 14. I DID NOT REPLY TO THIS AND THEN CALLED GND CTL ABOUT THE INACCURATE CALL SIGN. AFTER THE THIRD ATTEMPT, NASSAU GND CALLED BACK AND SAID 'XYZ IS CLRED TO CROSS RWY 14.' WHEN I WAS ON THE RWY DURING XING, NASSAU GND TOLD ME TO 'HOLD SHORT.' I TOLD GND I WAS ON THE RWY AND I DID NOT WANT TO STOP ON THE ACTIVE RWY. AT THE END OF RWY 14, I COULD SEE A SINGLE ENG ON THE WY. I COULD NOT TELL HE WAS ON HIS TKOF ROLL UNTIL I HAD CLRED RWY 14. HAD I STOPPED WHEN NASSAU TOLD ME TO, I WOULD HAVE BEEN ON THE RWY WITH THE SINGLE ENG DEPARTING OVER THE TOP OF ME. NASSAU CALLED ME BACK AND ASKED IF I HAD HEARD THE FIRST ATTEMPT WHEN THEY ASKED ME TO FOLLOW THE CESSNA AND CROSS RWY 14. I SAID YES, BUT IT WAS THE WRONG CALL SIGN, AND WAS GIVEN PERMISSION TO CROSS RWY 14 WITH THE CORRECT CALL SIGN XYZ.
