Narrative:
We took off from on to do figure 8's on pylons. About 2/3 of the way through maneuver, my instructor smelled something burning. We turned back toward norman to land. The cabin began to fill with smoke and there was intense heat on our feet. My instructor flew the plane while I performed the cabin fire checklist. We landed in a field. On the landing roll we came to rest inverted. We both exited the left side of aircraft and walked to the nearest house to use the phone. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the student pilot said that the fire was created by a malfunctioning refurbished landing gear pump for this rag. The fire melted the plastic reservoir. The aircraft hit a washout area in the field and broke the nose gear. It was a flight school aircraft. The FBO is going after the refurbisher of the pump for damages.
