Narrative:

I was flying at about 3500 ft MSL, 10 mi south of rhinelander airport. Being unfamiliar with the airport, I checked the green bay sectional chart (61ST edition) for the airport elevation. I read the elevation as 623 ft. I started my descent to a pattern altitude of 1600 ft. I was sure something was wrong when I got down to about 2100 ft. I seemed too low. I continued with a standard pattern entry and landed on runway 33 without incident. When on the ground, I looked more closely at the chart and discovered the field elevation is 1623 ft. The '1' digit is nearly completely hidden by the segmented line indicating class east airspace. I checked NOTAMS before the flight (via duats) but didn't see any applying to rhi airport.

Title: PLT OF AN SMA DSNDED RECOMMENDED TPA DURING APCH TO LAND AT AN UNCTLED ARPT DUE TO MISREADING THE AERO SECTIONAL CHART ARPT ELEVATION.

Narrative: I WAS FLYING AT ABOUT 3500 FT MSL, 10 MI S OF RHINELANDER ARPT. BEING UNFAMILIAR WITH THE ARPT, I CHKED THE GREEN BAY SECTIONAL CHART (61ST EDITION) FOR THE ARPT ELEVATION. I READ THE ELEVATION AS 623 FT. I STARTED MY DSCNT TO A PATTERN ALT OF 1600 FT. I WAS SURE SOMETHING WAS WRONG WHEN I GOT DOWN TO ABOUT 2100 FT. I SEEMED TOO LOW. I CONTINUED WITH A STANDARD PATTERN ENTRY AND LANDED ON RWY 33 WITHOUT INCIDENT. WHEN ON THE GND, I LOOKED MORE CLOSELY AT THE CHART AND DISCOVERED THE FIELD ELEVATION IS 1623 FT. THE '1' DIGIT IS NEARLY COMPLETELY HIDDEN BY THE SEGMENTED LINE INDICATING CLASS E AIRSPACE. I CHKED NOTAMS BEFORE THE FLT (VIA DUATS) BUT DIDN'T SEE ANY APPLYING TO RHI ARPT.
