Narrative:
We had received a clearance to cross advit intersection at 11000 ft on the wilbur 2 arrival. Descending through 11900 ft, TCASII popped up on our mfd with a TA and a '-9' diamond indication (traffic 900 ft below us) autoplt was on in a 1500-2000 FPM descent mode. First officer and I immediately were searching for traffic below us and slightly to our right. Before I knew it, I (at 11400 ft) heard a TCASII 'climb' command, disconnected the autoplt, started turning left and climbed while the first officer screamed over the intercom 'I got him...turn left...turn hard left...more' and I could hear ATC call and call for a king air to answer him. This all happened very fast and at the same time! My heart was racing and I told my first officer I could not turn steeper (greater than 45 degrees) and to report our altitude and course deviations to center. After center switched us over right away, I went back to previous frequency and reported again: evasive action taken. Unsafe.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: EMB145 CAPT MADE A STEEP L TURN AND CLBED IN RESPONSE TO A TCASII RA AND THE FO'S INSTRUCTIONS TO MAKE A HARD L TURN AFTER SIGHTING A BEECH KING AIR. ARTCC CTLR ALSO GAVE A TA.
Narrative: WE HAD RECEIVED A CLRNC TO CROSS ADVIT INTXN AT 11000 FT ON THE WILBUR 2 ARR. DSNDING THROUGH 11900 FT, TCASII POPPED UP ON OUR MFD WITH A TA AND A '-9' DIAMOND INDICATION (TFC 900 FT BELOW US) AUTOPLT WAS ON IN A 1500-2000 FPM DSCNT MODE. FO AND I IMMEDIATELY WERE SEARCHING FOR TFC BELOW US AND SLIGHTLY TO OUR R. BEFORE I KNEW IT, I (AT 11400 FT) HEARD A TCASII 'CLB' COMMAND, DISCONNECTED THE AUTOPLT, STARTED TURNING L AND CLBED WHILE THE FO SCREAMED OVER THE INTERCOM 'I GOT HIM...TURN L...TURN HARD L...MORE' AND I COULD HEAR ATC CALL AND CALL FOR A KING AIR TO ANSWER HIM. THIS ALL HAPPENED VERY FAST AND AT THE SAME TIME! MY HEART WAS RACING AND I TOLD MY FO I COULD NOT TURN STEEPER (GREATER THAN 45 DEGS) AND TO RPT OUR ALT AND COURSE DEVS TO CTR. AFTER CTR SWITCHED US OVER RIGHT AWAY, I WENT BACK TO PREVIOUS FREQ AND RPTED AGAIN: EVASIVE ACTION TAKEN. UNSAFE.
