Narrative:

My student and I were departing the mankato airport in VMC, but on an IFR flight plan. At the time we were departing, there were numerous other VFR traffic in the pattern practicing lndgs. ZMP gave us a right turn for departure. We were concerned this would be a conflict with the traffic in the pattern at mankato, so we turned left to follow the traffic. During this turn we were in VMC the entire time and watching for other traffic. Things that could have been done different to improve the safety of this flight would have been: departed VFR until we were clear of traffic, and then opened our IFR flight plan after we were sure there would be no conflict with the traffic in the pattern. Advise ZMP of our intentions well before we made our turn, also advise center as to the ceilings and visibility, and tell them that there was considerable VFR traffic in the pattern at the time.

Title: PA-28 INSTRUCTOR AND STUDENT DID NOT TURN TO THE ARTCC RADAR CTLR'S HDG IN ORDER TO AVOID OTHER ACFT IN THE ARPT TFC PATTERN AT MKT IN ZMP CLASS E AIRSPACE.

Narrative: MY STUDENT AND I WERE DEPARTING THE MANKATO ARPT IN VMC, BUT ON AN IFR FLT PLAN. AT THE TIME WE WERE DEPARTING, THERE WERE NUMEROUS OTHER VFR TFC IN THE PATTERN PRACTICING LNDGS. ZMP GAVE US A R TURN FOR DEP. WE WERE CONCERNED THIS WOULD BE A CONFLICT WITH THE TFC IN THE PATTERN AT MANKATO, SO WE TURNED L TO FOLLOW THE TFC. DURING THIS TURN WE WERE IN VMC THE ENTIRE TIME AND WATCHING FOR OTHER TFC. THINGS THAT COULD HAVE BEEN DONE DIFFERENT TO IMPROVE THE SAFETY OF THIS FLT WOULD HAVE BEEN: DEPARTED VFR UNTIL WE WERE CLR OF TFC, AND THEN OPENED OUR IFR FLT PLAN AFTER WE WERE SURE THERE WOULD BE NO CONFLICT WITH THE TFC IN THE PATTERN. ADVISE ZMP OF OUR INTENTIONS WELL BEFORE WE MADE OUR TURN, ALSO ADVISE CTR AS TO THE CEILINGS AND VISIBILITY, AND TELL THEM THAT THERE WAS CONSIDERABLE VFR TFC IN THE PATTERN AT THE TIME.
