Narrative:

Flight plan/release was printed on a less than satisfactory printer. Nose number on flight plan and tps was xa with 1/2 of the second letter chopped off. Aircraft on gate nose number was xab. After brake release, but before push, first officer noticed that the FAA registration numbers did not match. I held the push and called dispatch via cell phone. They advised pulling new paperwork. Agent did so at my request and handed me new paperwork through captain's window. Lesson learned: get a better printed copy of release paperwork. Also, plan to buy beverage of first officer's choice for making a great catch and save.
