Narrative:
On initial taxi out on ground in den, were given directions to taxi on 'left' to 'ed' then to hold short runway 17L. On approaching 'ed' ground told us to keep our speed up because an airplane was on a 6 mile final on runway 17R. On approaching 'M' taxiway on 'ed' the controller told us to hold short of 'M' followed by a quick query by us. Then we were quickly instructed to cross 'M' and then hold short of runway 17R. By the time we responded we stopped on the extended centerline of runway 17R on taxiway 'ed.' we were then instructed to continue our taxi on 'ed' to hold short of runway 17L. The airplane on approach went around. Several factors led to this situation. 1) we initially keep up a high taxi speed by ground control to clear an area of an approaching plane. 2) ground control then gave us several quick commands that were confusing and contradictory. 3) when finally told to hold short of runway 17R, the command should have been to hold short of the approach end and not the runway itself. 4) there were no hold short lines, lights or signs on 'ed' taxiway for runway 17R. 4) there are no hold short lines or lights depicted on our commercial charts and no special instructions to stay clear of 'ed' taxiway near runway 17R. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated he became totally confused with the stop go instructions from the ground controller. He said they did not recall seeing any signage or lines in the area that would require him to stop.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B727 CREW ARE CONFUSED WITH A CLRNC TO CROSS THE APCH OF A RWY WITH TFC REPORTED ON FINAL.
Narrative: ON INITIAL TAXI OUT ON GND IN DEN, WERE GIVEN DIRECTIONS TO TAXI ON 'L' TO 'ED' THEN TO HOLD SHORT RWY 17L. ON APCHING 'ED' GND TOLD US TO KEEP OUR SPEED UP BECAUSE AN AIRPLANE WAS ON A 6 MILE FINAL ON RWY 17R. ON APCHING 'M' TXWY ON 'ED' THE CTLR TOLD US TO HOLD SHORT OF 'M' FOLLOWED BY A QUICK QUERY BY US. THEN WE WERE QUICKLY INSTRUCTED TO CROSS 'M' AND THEN HOLD SHORT OF RWY 17R. BY THE TIME WE RESPONDED WE STOPPED ON THE EXTENDED CTRLINE OF RWY 17R ON TXWY 'ED.' WE WERE THEN INSTRUCTED TO CONTINUE OUR TAXI ON 'ED' TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 17L. THE AIRPLANE ON APCH WENT AROUND. SEVERAL FACTORS LED TO THIS SITUATION. 1) WE INITIALLY KEEP UP A HIGH TAXI SPEED BY GND CTL TO CLR AN AREA OF AN APCHING PLANE. 2) GND CTL THEN GAVE US SEVERAL QUICK COMMANDS THAT WERE CONFUSING AND CONTRADICTORY. 3) WHEN FINALLY TOLD TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 17R, THE COMMAND SHOULD HAVE BEEN TO HOLD SHORT OF THE APCH END AND NOT THE RWY ITSELF. 4) THERE WERE NO HOLD SHORT LINES, LIGHTS OR SIGNS ON 'ED' TXWY FOR RWY 17R. 4) THERE ARE NO HOLD SHORT LINES OR LIGHTS DEPICTED ON OUR COMMERCIAL CHARTS AND NO SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS TO STAY CLR OF 'ED' TXWY NEAR RWY 17R. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED HE BECAME TOTALLY CONFUSED WITH THE STOP GO INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE GND CTLR. HE SAID THEY DID NOT RECALL SEEING ANY SIGNAGE OR LINES IN THE AREA THAT WOULD REQUIRE HIM TO STOP.
