Narrative:
Taxiing to runway 23 in yyz from terminal. We took taxiway a to taxiway H to taxiway Q for full length of runway 23. The captain stopped the aircraft on parallel taxiway Q prior to turning left to join runway 23. I was trying to figure out which tower was correct for that runway. They were not labeled. This would have possibly stopped the incursion. I chose the wrong frequency and was advised to switch to the other frequency. When I did, tower told us we were past the hold short line and cleared us for takeoff. He had traffic at the marker. If the tower frequencys were labeled appropriately, the tower controller may have stopped our incursion before it happened. Also, if the hold short lines were depicted on the airport diagram, the captain may have seen where the hold short lines were and stopped accordingly. My confusion over which frequency was correct took my attention from outside the plane to inside. I may have seen the hold short line if my attention was not diverted. Taxiway names are from memory and may be incorrect.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: MD88 CREW HAD RWY INCURSION IN RWY 23 AT TXWY Q AT CYYZ.
Narrative: TAXIING TO RWY 23 IN YYZ FROM TERMINAL. WE TOOK TXWY A TO TXWY H TO TXWY Q FOR FULL LENGTH OF RWY 23. THE CAPT STOPPED THE ACFT ON PARALLEL TXWY Q PRIOR TO TURNING L TO JOIN RWY 23. I WAS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHICH TWR WAS CORRECT FOR THAT RWY. THEY WERE NOT LABELED. THIS WOULD HAVE POSSIBLY STOPPED THE INCURSION. I CHOSE THE WRONG FREQ AND WAS ADVISED TO SWITCH TO THE OTHER FREQ. WHEN I DID, TWR TOLD US WE WERE PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINE AND CLRED US FOR TKOF. HE HAD TFC AT THE MARKER. IF THE TWR FREQS WERE LABELED APPROPRIATELY, THE TWR CTLR MAY HAVE STOPPED OUR INCURSION BEFORE IT HAPPENED. ALSO, IF THE HOLD SHORT LINES WERE DEPICTED ON THE ARPT DIAGRAM, THE CAPT MAY HAVE SEEN WHERE THE HOLD SHORT LINES WERE AND STOPPED ACCORDINGLY. MY CONFUSION OVER WHICH FREQ WAS CORRECT TOOK MY ATTN FROM OUTSIDE THE PLANE TO INSIDE. I MAY HAVE SEEN THE HOLD SHORT LINE IF MY ATTN WAS NOT DIVERTED. TXWY NAMES ARE FROM MEMORY AND MAY BE INCORRECT.
