Narrative:
During cruise at FL370, noted unusual noise behind first officer instrument panel, followed by smoke and fumes in cockpit. WX radar failed, instrument switching system failed, equipment overheat EICAS message displayed, captain's and first officer's ADI failed, alternate efi for ADI's failed. Declared emergency into rdu. Completed appropriate equipment overheat checklist. ADI's returned to normal. Landing at rdu, where maintenance found failed equipment cooling fan. Smoke had dispersed quickly and no oxygen masks were required. Due to unknown smoke origin, an emergency was declared.

Title: A B757-200 FLT EXPERIENCES SMOKE IN THE COCKPIT WITH THE CREW DECLARING AN EMER AND DIVERTING INTO RDU, NC.
Narrative: DURING CRUISE AT FL370, NOTED UNUSUAL NOISE BEHIND FO INST PANEL, FOLLOWED BY SMOKE AND FUMES IN COCKPIT. WX RADAR FAILED, INSTRUMENT SWITCHING SYS FAILED, EQUIP OVERHEAT EICAS MESSAGE DISPLAYED, CAPT'S AND FO'S ADI FAILED, ALTERNATE EFI FOR ADI'S FAILED. DECLARED EMER INTO RDU. COMPLETED APPROPRIATE EQUIP OVERHEAT CHKLIST. ADI'S RETURNED TO NORMAL. LNDG AT RDU, WHERE MAINT FOUND FAILED EQUIP COOLING FAN. SMOKE HAD DISPERSED QUICKLY AND NO OXYGEN MASKS WERE REQUIRED.
