Narrative:
Contacted tower 10.5 mi southeast. Was informed to report 2 mi, right base, runway 23, and to be looking for a cessna. We were in warrior PA28-161. As we arrived at 2 mi right base, the cessna reported 2 mi right base. Since we were at a 2 mi right base and never observed the other aircraft, we reported 2 mi right base. The tower informed us that we were directly above the cessna. We immediately turned north and stopped our descent, avoiding the cessna by approximately 150 ft vertically. At no time was the information from the tower concerning our imminent or unsafe condition.
