Narrative:

Departed rno airport on runway 16R. Climbing through 5500 ft made a left turn direct fmg VORTAC. Reported into departure control, explained that we were in a left turn. We were advised that we should have continued on runway heading in accordance with the reno two departure, which we had received and accepted. I had thought the reno two departure had been amended by NOTAM (attached). (Notations made prior to our departure.) a subsequent phone call to the controller convinced me that the error was mine, that an IFR departure procedure is not part of a SID. I stand corrected. However, after over 30 yrs of flying, most of it IFR, I consider myself to be reasonably knowledgeable about terps. Clearly, this one slipped through. I can see others making the same mistake. It might be worthwhile to make a note on the NOTAM in some manner.

Title: AN MDT CREW PREFLTING IN RNO MISINTERPED THE NOTAMS, LEADING THEM TO TURN PREMATURELY DURING DEP.

Narrative: DEPARTED RNO ARPT ON RWY 16R. CLBING THROUGH 5500 FT MADE A L TURN DIRECT FMG VORTAC. RPTED INTO DEP CTL, EXPLAINED THAT WE WERE IN A L TURN. WE WERE ADVISED THAT WE SHOULD HAVE CONTINUED ON RWY HEADING IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE RENO TWO DEP, WHICH WE HAD RECEIVED AND ACCEPTED. I HAD THOUGHT THE RENO TWO DEP HAD BEEN AMENDED BY NOTAM (ATTACHED). (NOTATIONS MADE PRIOR TO OUR DEP.) A SUBSEQUENT PHONE CALL TO THE CTLR CONVINCED ME THAT THE ERROR WAS MINE, THAT AN IFR DEP PROC IS NOT PART OF A SID. I STAND CORRECTED. HOWEVER, AFTER OVER 30 YRS OF FLYING, MOST OF IT IFR, I CONSIDER MYSELF TO BE REASONABLY KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT TERPS. CLRLY, THIS ONE SLIPPED THROUGH. I CAN SEE OTHERS MAKING THE SAME MISTAKE. IT MIGHT BE WORTHWHILE TO MAKE A NOTE ON THE NOTAM IN SOME MANNER.
