Narrative:

Shut down #2 engine at cruise due to no oil quantity. At FL330, over lake michigan, so noticed #2 oil quantity down to 2 gals. Upon monitoring oil quantity, it decreased slowly to zero, followed by oil pressure decreasing into yellow band. A precautionary shutdown was commenced at XA16Z. We declared an emergency with ZAU and proceeded to dtw. Dispatch and maintenance control had been consulted and concurred with our actions. An emergency was declared to dispatch and the flight attendants. An uneventful descent, approach, and landing were made. We requested runway 22L (longest) and that equipment be standing by. We chose to continue to dtw to land because it was just as safe as any other alternate. Winds at ord and mke were considered as too high. Approach and landing were uneventful. Supplemental information from acn 521604: the aircraft performed just fine on 2 engines and the flight was completed without any difficulties. It was a routine precautionary shutdown that was accomplished before the oil pressure on the #2 engine dropped below the red line. This was my third 2-ENG landing on a DC10 and the aircraft always flew just fine on 2 engines. If not for the PA informing our passenger that we had shut an engine down and the fire trucks on landing, I doubt that they would have known that we had any problem at all.

IT WAS A ROUTINE PRECAUTIONARY SHUTDOWN THAT WAS ACCOMPLISHED BEFORE THE OIL PRESSURE ON THE #2 ENG DROPPED BELOW THE RED LINE. THIS WAS MY THIRD 2-ENG LNDG ON A DC10 AND THE ACFT ALWAYS FLEW JUST FINE ON 2 ENGS. IF NOT FOR THE PA INFORMING OUR PAX THAT WE HAD SHUT AN ENG DOWN AND THE FIRE TRUCKS ON LNDG, I DOUBT THAT THEY WOULD HAVE KNOWN THAT WE HAD ANY PROB AT ALL.
