Narrative:

Passing 'konzl' intersection on paradise 4 arrival to lax, level at 17000 ft, first officer dialed in 14000 ft on altitude display on MCP rather than 16000 ft (minimum altitude at 'turtle' intersection). I did not notice until passing about 15900 ft prior to 'trtle.' I immediately corrected, but we bottomed out at about 15550 ft. Climbed back to 16000 ft by about 'trtle.' remainder of arrival normal. No radio transmission from ATC concerning altitude. No traffic in proximity. In retrospect, first officer XXXX is very new, so I should have briefed him on this arrival and reviewed altitude change procedures. This was his first month on the line and he had not been into lax before. A better approach briefing on my part would have avoided this.
