Narrative:
About 1 hour after takeoff, passenger seated in coach went forward to use the business class lavatory, hassled a flight attendant in business class. When she told him meal carts were in the way, he demanded to see the captain -- got very rude and argumentative. The purser went back to speak with him -- noticed the smell of alcohol on his breath. Decided to try to cut off or lessen his alcohol intake. He demanded more alcohol. Went from coach galley to business galley and back and forth yelling at the flight attendants, demanding alcohol during some turbulence. When the seatbelt sign came on, he refused to situation down. Never did situation down -- proceeded to get more and more belligerent as flight went on. He made odd statements. For example: that he was the head of fbi, then that he was in the witness protection program -- used lots of profanity toward the flight attendants. Eventually threatened to 'kick another passenger's ass' and told a flight attendant that he would 'break her neck.' at this point, we decided to land and have him removed. We diverted to iad to do this. The purser wanted to try to make it to jfk because he (the man) was traveling with his 10 yr old son and thought it would be better to get the son to new york, but this man was just so unbearable. They were escorted off the aircraft by police in iad. We then went on to jfk. Supplemental information from acn 522694: passenger got on plane, ordered 2 drinks. He was on an antidepressant and wouldn't stay seated when seatbelt sign on. Appeared drunk. Was verbally abusive to flight attendants with language and threatening passenger and flight crew.
