Narrative:
While flying about 80-100 mi out of stl, the #1 engine ran away and was uncontrollable with throttle. After going into our manual, we shut down #1 engine in accordance with our checklist before the engine overtemp or more damage occurred. I talked to dispatch and maintenance and we decided stl was the nearest suitable runway, now about 70-80 mi off our nose. Briefed flight attendants and passenger. Declared emergency and had equipment standing by. Uneventful landing.
