Narrative:
On flight under IFR to sdm (san diego brown municipal field) VOR circling approach, overshot intended airport and landed at tijuana airport 2 NM south. IFR canceled when we had wrong airport in sight. Chain of events and human performance considerations: 1) first trip in this aircraft for me. 2) attention still stuck on previous mechanical problem. 3) not thoroughly familiar with approach plate. 4) approach plate was a copy generated through a printer. Legibility was poor on my copy of plate. 5) my attention was outside of aircraft trying to make visual contact with airport, not watching DME. 6) not aware of additional airport only 2 NM south. 7) nighttime approach, with tower closed. 8) discovered after landing by radio call from tijuana tower.
