Narrative:
Approaching dfw from msy we were told by approach control to expect runway ILS 35C for which we briefed. We were on a vector from the southeast to intercept the localizer. We first realized that there had been a communications breakdown when the final controller cleared us to cross galop at 4000 ft (runway 35R ILS). I asked for confirmation of the runway and was told 35R. We tuned in the frequency for 35R and captured the localizer, but with an overshoot of the centerline. We were in and out of the clouds and saw another aircraft ahead and above to our left on final for runway 35C. There was not a conflict (no TCAS warning), but the potential was present. We had not received a clearance for runway 35R prior to the clearance to cross galop at 4000 ft. In the future I will ensure that the 'expect ILS runway -' becomes 'cleared for ILS runway.'

Title: A B757 PIC RPT ON AN OVERSHOOT OF THE RWY 35R LOCALIZER WHEN A LATE NOTICE OF RWY ASSIGNMENT WAS GIVEN WHILE ON AN APCH VECTOR TO DFW, TX.

THERE WAS NOT A CONFLICT (NO TCAS WARNING), BUT THE POTENTIAL WAS PRESENT. WE HAD NOT RECEIVED A CLRNC FOR RWY 35R PRIOR TO THE CLRNC TO CROSS GALOP AT 4000 FT. IN THE FUTURE I WILL ENSURE THAT THE 'EXPECT ILS RWY -' BECOMES 'CLRED FOR ILS RWY.'
