Narrative:

Immediately after takeoff the local controller informed us that 'part of the #1 engine cover fell off the airplane.' the only cockpit indication was a zero egt reading of #1 engine. We elected to remain in the local pattern and return to land. We dumped approximately 40 thousand ibs of fuel (to landing west) and received radar vectors for a visual approach to runway 5L at ZZZ. After normal landing and roll out we shutdown the #1 engine as a precaution. Crash and rescue crew met the aircraft on a taxiway to inspect for damage, confirmed part of engine had departed the aircraft but no fire. Taxiway to gate uneventfully.
