Narrative:
I was grounded at ZZZ airport during the week after the attack on the world trade center. After the cancellation of the event several pilots monitored the frequently changing NOTAMS as we awaited release of the airspace. On saturday I was told that it was possible to return home if a flight plan was filed and victor airways were adhered to. I did this and found in flight that I was assigned IFR altitudes. I thought this might be for traffic or due to the events on september, tuesday. In retrospect I was probably on an IFR flight plan since I later noticed that VFR flight was still prohibited on this date. There were no conflicts or problems of any sort during the flight. The weather was cloudless over the entire route. I should have read the NOTAMS more closely.
