Narrative:
At FL290 on airway, heard loud popping from overhead circuit breaker panel, followed by radio static and then smoke coming from the overhead, donned oxygen masks and began to troubleshoot the problem. Investigated the source of the smoke and determined smoke had stopped. Discussed possible actions and divert options. Notified company of intention to divert got WX for XXXX and ZZZZ declared emergency and got vectors to ZZZZ complied with all operational company procedures regarding smoke in cockpit. Completed all appropriate checklists, briefed approach, dumped fuel, accomplished uneventful approach and landing on runway 6 ZZZZ taxied to gate with fire truck escort. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the smoke and fumes were caused by a failed cockpit lighting module located in the upper right corner of the area above the overhead circuit breaker panel. The reporter said the smoke dispersed quickly but the electrical odor was around for a longer time. The reporter stated no circuit breakers were found tripped.

Title: A MD-11 IN CRUISE AT FL290 DECLARED AN EMER AND DIVERTED DUE TO SMOKE AND FUMES IN THE COCKPIT.
Narrative: AT FL290 ON AIRWAY, HEARD LOUD POPPING FROM OVERHEAD CIRCUIT BREAKER PANEL, FOLLOWED BY RADIO STATIC AND THEN SMOKE COMING FROM THE OVERHEAD, DONNED OXYGEN MASKS AND BEGAN TO TROUBLESHOOT THE PROB. INVESTIGATED THE SOURCE OF THE SMOKE AND DETERMINED SMOKE HAD STOPPED. DISCUSSED POSSIBLE ACTIONS AND DIVERT OPTIONS. NOTIFIED COMPANY OF INTENTION TO DIVERT GOT WX FOR XXXX AND ZZZZ DECLARED EMER AND GOT VECTORS TO ZZZZ COMPLIED WITH ALL OPERATIONAL COMPANY PROCS REGARDING SMOKE IN COCKPIT. COMPLETED ALL APPROPRIATE CHKLISTS, BRIEFED APCH, DUMPED FUEL, ACCOMPLISHED UNEVENTFUL APCH AND LNDG ON RWY 6 ZZZZ TAXIED TO GATE WITH FIRE TRUCK ESCORT. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE SMOKE AND FUMES WERE CAUSED BY A FAILED COCKPIT LIGHTING MODULE LOCATED IN THE UPPER RIGHT CORNER OF THE AREA ABOVE THE OVERHEAD CIRCUIT BREAKER PANEL. THE RPTR SAID THE SMOKE DISPERSED QUICKLY BUT THE ELECTRICAL ODOR WAS AROUND FOR A LONGER TIME. THE RPTR STATED NO CIRCUIT BREAKERS WERE FOUND TRIPPED.
