Narrative:
After leaving bwi, we were being vectored around in area to try to avoid thunderstorm cells. We were given 11000 ft as altitude clearance. We programmed our plane by putting 11000 ft in the altitude window. We were in VNAV. As plane climbed through about 8000 ft, 'altitude capture' appeared in the ADI. At 11000 ft the VNAV went to 'altitude hold' and the mode control panel went to 'hold,' but the aircraft flight director continued with a climb and the power did not come back for level flight. The plane was being hand flown and we continued to 11400 ft before it was recognized and hand flown back down to 11000 ft. The autoplts also started a climb when engaged. In order to correct, we went to vertical speed, then back to VNAV and the problem corrected itself. ATC did not question or mention our 400 ft violation.
