Narrative:
Upon taxi out, we discovered that there was a discrepancy between our flight paperwork and the maintenance release document. The paperwork for our flight reflected no open items or deferred items. We found a single channel failure on the automatic slat system on taxi out which did not have a deferral sticker nor was it listed on our flight paperwork, but it was in the logbook. After conferring with maintenance and dispatch, we were told to return to the gate so that maintenance could look at the problem. Upon return to the gate it was discovered that the maintenance release document (which also reflected that a landing light was deferred -- an item that actually had been cleared) was incorrect and the maintenance computer (which reflected that there were no maintenance items) was also incorrect and therefore dispatch had no knowledge of the automatic slat problem. We realized that a more thorough comparison of the logbook maintenance release document with our paperwork may have brought this to our attention prior to pushback. The maintenance personnel appeared to understand the negligence on their part as well.
