Air Traffic Incident | Operational Error |
Narrative:
Air carrier X at FL330, requesting FL370. Air carrier Y at FL350 swbound toward air carrier X. Wab sector radar controller climbed air carrier X thru air carrier Y. Simply human error. Supplemental information from acn 527146: two aircraft were in the southwest quadrant of my airspace. Air carrier X had just called on FL330. I looked at his requested altitude and climbed him to the requested altitude FL370. Following those instructions I called chicago center to verbalize a pointout on an aircraft nearing their boundary. Afterwards, I realized my error in climbing air carrier X because he was in very close proximity with aircraft Y, swbound at FL350 and I tried to expedite the air carrier X back down to FL330, but vertical separation was already lost as well as the required 5 miles. Volume of traffic did not impact this scenario. It was oversight on my behalf when I issued the climbing instruction.

Title: ZID CIC/SUPVR RPTS ON ZID CTLR INVOLVED IN AN OPERROR WHEN CLBING A MD80 THROUGH THE ALT OF A TRACKED A319, APPARENTLY CAUSED BY MENTAL LAPSE.
Narrative: ACR X AT FL330, REQUESTING FL370. ACR Y AT FL350 SWBOUND TOWARD ACR X. WAB SECTOR RADAR CTLR CLBED ACR X THRU ACR Y. SIMPLY HUMAN ERROR. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 527146: TWO ACFT WERE IN THE SW QUADRANT OF MY AIRSPACE. ACR X HAD JUST CALLED ON FL330. I LOOKED AT HIS REQUESTED ALTITUDE AND CLBED HIM TO THE REQUESTED ALTITUDE FL370. FOLLOWING THOSE INSTRUCTIONS I CALLED CHICAGO CENTER TO VERBALIZE A POINTOUT ON AN ACFT NEARING THEIR BOUNDARY. AFTERWARDS, I REALIZED MY ERROR IN CLBING ACR X BECAUSE HE WAS IN VERY CLOSE PROXIMITY WITH ACFT Y, SWBOUND AT FL350 AND I TRIED TO EXPEDITE THE ACR X BACK DOWN TO FL330, BUT VERTICAL SEPARATION WAS ALREADY LOST AS WELL AS THE REQUIRED 5 MILES. VOLUME OF TFC DID NOT IMPACT THIS SCENARIO. IT WAS OVERSIGHT ON MY BEHALF WHEN I ISSUED THE CLBING INSTRUCTION.
