Narrative:

During an IFR training flight, we were cleared to taxi to runway 35. Arriving there, we taxied past the hold short line for runway 35 and stopped between the hold short for runway 4. Being unfamiliar with this particular runway assignment, combined with this unusual arrangement/combination of hold short lines and their faded paint stripes without shading, made it easy to become confused about the correct hold short position. Moreover, runway 4 intersects near the end of runway 35 and the taxiway makes about a 50 degree turn right after crossing runway 4 which brings up the dual hold short markings rather quickly. Any pilot would feel a bit cramped for space, perhaps, and if even slightly distraction, inadvertently taxi past the first hold short. Finally, the hold short markings as depicted leave the pilot(south) wondering why would there be a hold short line coming off the departure end of runway 17. In other words, evidently one could not taxi off runway 17 -- he must stop on the runway and get permission to taxi off. Not an ideal situation, in my opinion. Suggestions: 1) repaint the faded hold lines and shadow them with black paint to make them more visible. 2) at any airport, perhaps a lighted sign indicating the meaning of hold lines in a situation like this where dual hold short lines from opposite directions are in close proximity to each other would be of significant benefit.

Title: A B190 PLT TAXIED PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINE DURING TAXI FOR TKOF AT HUT.

Narrative: DURING AN IFR TRAINING FLT, WE WERE CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 35. ARRIVING THERE, WE TAXIED PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 35 AND STOPPED BTWN THE HOLD SHORT FOR RWY 4. BEING UNFAMILIAR WITH THIS PARTICULAR RWY ASSIGNMENT, COMBINED WITH THIS UNUSUAL ARRANGEMENT/COMBINATION OF HOLD SHORT LINES AND THEIR FADED PAINT STRIPES WITHOUT SHADING, MADE IT EASY TO BECOME CONFUSED ABOUT THE CORRECT HOLD SHORT POS. MOREOVER, RWY 4 INTERSECTS NEAR THE END OF RWY 35 AND THE TXWY MAKES ABOUT A 50 DEG TURN RIGHT AFTER XING RWY 4 WHICH BRINGS UP THE DUAL HOLD SHORT MARKINGS RATHER QUICKLY. ANY PLT WOULD FEEL A BIT CRAMPED FOR SPACE, PERHAPS, AND IF EVEN SLIGHTLY DISTR, INADVERTENTLY TAXI PAST THE FIRST HOLD SHORT. FINALLY, THE HOLD SHORT MARKINGS AS DEPICTED LEAVE THE PLT(S) WONDERING WHY WOULD THERE BE A HOLD SHORT LINE COMING OFF THE DEP END OF RWY 17. IN OTHER WORDS, EVIDENTLY ONE COULD NOT TAXI OFF RWY 17 -- HE MUST STOP ON THE RWY AND GET PERMISSION TO TAXI OFF. NOT AN IDEAL SIT, IN MY OPINION. SUGGESTIONS: 1) REPAINT THE FADED HOLD LINES AND SHADOW THEM WITH BLACK PAINT TO MAKE THEM MORE VISIBLE. 2) AT ANY ARPT, PERHAPS A LIGHTED SIGN INDICATING THE MEANING OF HOLD LINES IN A SIT LIKE THIS WHERE DUAL HOLD SHORT LINES FROM OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS ARE IN CLOSE PROX TO EACH OTHER WOULD BE OF SIGNIFICANT BENEFIT.
