Narrative:
I had arranged to work with a gentleman in his airplane to assist in cleaning up his IFR skills before his check ride. I'm an instructor with 1000 hours plus in that area. I checked the local area where his plane was with no local listed NOTAMS other than facilities. After 4 hours of traveling north VOR to VOR practicing holds and tracking, we discussed lunch at a favorite restaurant in ZZZ. The airport was in a restr zone due to that facility. Upon reaching airport we were advised of the closure and immediately departed to the west and monitored 121.5 without hearing a call to us. The error was mine for not thoroughly investigating all area restrs before flight. There was no set route of flight or intended landing as we were reviewing navigational skills in the local area.
