Narrative:
Tower cleared us for takeoff on runway 8R in atl. There was no turn given with the takeoff clearance. We maintained runway heading until switching to departure. Departure turned us immediately to a 020 degree heading, telling us that we should've been given a turn by tower, so as not to conflict with 'straight out' traffic taking off from runway 9L. We had the traffic from runway 9L in sight at all times. There was no conflict, either visually or on TCASII.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: DC9 CREW WAS NOT GIVEN A DEP TURN BY THE TWR AS EXPECTED BY THE DEP CTLR.
Narrative: TWR CLRED US FOR TKOF ON RWY 8R IN ATL. THERE WAS NO TURN GIVEN WITH THE TKOF CLRNC. WE MAINTAINED RWY HDG UNTIL SWITCHING TO DEP. DEP TURNED US IMMEDIATELY TO A 020 DEG HDG, TELLING US THAT WE SHOULD'VE BEEN GIVEN A TURN BY TWR, SO AS NOT TO CONFLICT WITH 'STRAIGHT OUT' TFC TAKING OFF FROM RWY 9L. WE HAD THE TFC FROM RWY 9L IN SIGHT AT ALL TIMES. THERE WAS NO CONFLICT, EITHER VISUALLY OR ON TCASII.
