Narrative:
On taxi out the ground controller told us we would have an eight to nine minute wait for departure. The wait was from denver or salt lake center. The ground controller immediately called us back and said our clearance was available. We finished our taxi checklist and the first officer copied the clearance. At the end of the taxiway I crept past the hold short line. At this point the first officer pointed out that I had taxied past the hold short line. I stopped and within a second the tower or ground controller called and said 'hold your position.' what I heard or what I wanted to hear was, 'position and hold,' so I released the brakes and moved into position on runway 18. The controller immediately called and said we were not cleared into position. The first officer acknowledged this with the controller as I taxied off the runway and back behind the hold short line. There was no other surface movement on the txwys of the airport. The closest airborne traffic was a beechcraft about nine miles out. Shortly thereafter we were cleared for takeoff and departure without incident. Contributing factors: 1) I was overcoming a cold and had already called in sick earlier in the month. I wasn't as sharp as I should have been. 2) this was the last leg of the last day of three days of duty. Get homeitis might have been intruding on my thinking.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: DO328 CREW TAXIED INTO POSITION WHEN THE TWR CTLR TOLD THEM TO HOLD POSITION.
Narrative: ON TAXI OUT THE GND CTLR TOLD US WE WOULD HAVE AN EIGHT TO NINE MINUTE WAIT FOR DEP. THE WAIT WAS FROM DENVER OR SALT LAKE CTR. THE GND CTLR IMMEDIATELY CALLED US BACK AND SAID OUR CLRNC WAS AVAILABLE. WE FINISHED OUR TAXI CHKLIST AND THE FO COPIED THE CLRNC. AT THE END OF THE TXWY I CREPT PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINE. AT THIS POINT THE FO POINTED OUT THAT I HAD TAXIED PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINE. I STOPPED AND WITHIN A SECOND THE TWR OR GND CTLR CALLED AND SAID 'HOLD YOUR POSITION.' WHAT I HEARD OR WHAT I WANTED TO HEAR WAS, 'POSITION AND HOLD,' SO I RELEASED THE BRAKES AND MOVED INTO POSITION ON RWY 18. THE CTLR IMMEDIATELY CALLED AND SAID WE WERE NOT CLRED INTO POSITION. THE FO ACKNOWLEDGED THIS WITH THE CTLR AS I TAXIED OFF THE RWY AND BACK BEHIND THE HOLD SHORT LINE. THERE WAS NO OTHER SURFACE MOVEMENT ON THE TXWYS OF THE ARPT. THE CLOSEST AIRBORNE TFC WAS A BEECHCRAFT ABOUT NINE MILES OUT. SHORTLY THEREAFTER WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF AND DEP WITHOUT INCIDENT.
