Narrative:

Requested clearance from tower to land. I was 4TH in pattern flying east. Advised to follow traffic at 11 O'clock position, initially did not find. Later found traffic and follow (about 8 mi west of airport) continue follow, but then lost traffic in sight. (Did not tell tower.) later advised to flight southeast however, I did, but it was too close to the next airport airspace (opf). As I was ready for final I was advised from tower to look at traffic at 1 O'clock position. Traffic #3 was suddenly in front of me and low about/or less than 500 ft. (#1 and #2 already landed.) factors: 1) should have told ATC we lost traffic in sight. 2) ATC should have kept me or other planes with good separation. Corrective actions: 1) tell ATC I lost traffic in sight, 2) keep looking to try to find traffic, 3) possible avoid landing and do a 360 degrees, and 4) ATC could have advised of possible closest traffic being too close.

Narrative: REQUESTED CLRNC FROM TWR TO LAND. I WAS 4TH IN PATTERN FLYING E. ADVISED TO FOLLOW TFC AT 11 O'CLOCK POS, INITIALLY DID NOT FIND. LATER FOUND TFC AND FOLLOW (ABOUT 8 MI W OF ARPT) CONTINUE FOLLOW, BUT THEN LOST TFC IN SIGHT. (DID NOT TELL TWR.) LATER ADVISED TO FLT SE HOWEVER, I DID, BUT IT WAS TOO CLOSE TO THE NEXT ARPT AIRSPACE (OPF). AS I WAS READY FOR FINAL I WAS ADVISED FROM TWR TO LOOK AT TFC AT 1 O'CLOCK POS. TFC #3 WAS SUDDENLY IN FRONT OF ME AND LOW ABOUT/OR LESS THAN 500 FT. (#1 AND #2 ALREADY LANDED.) FACTORS: 1) SHOULD HAVE TOLD ATC WE LOST TFC IN SIGHT. 2) ATC SHOULD HAVE KEPT ME OR OTHER PLANES WITH GOOD SEPARATION. CORRECTIVE ACTIONS: 1) TELL ATC I LOST TFC IN SIGHT, 2) KEEP LOOKING TO TRY TO FIND TFC, 3) POSSIBLE AVOID LNDG AND DO A 360 DEGS, AND 4) ATC COULD HAVE ADVISED OF POSSIBLE CLOSEST TFC BEING TOO CLOSE.
