Narrative:
While en route from iad-pit, l-hand red engine beta light came on. After talking to maintenance, they suggested we return to iad. After speaking to dispatch it was agreed upon that we should return to iad. We told ATC that we needed to return back to iad. Light came on again and engine was shut down. All checklists were complied with both prior and following engine shutdown. After engine was shut down, I contacted dispatch about nearest suitable airport. Due to IFR conditions and icing, both dispatch and I agreed iad was best airport. Emergency was declared and we returned to iad under single engine conditions without further incident. Supplemental information from acn 531996: all checklists were run and we returned to iad without further incident. In addition the cabin passenger were prepared for an evacuate/evacuation. However, an evacuate/evacuation was not necessary.
