Narrative:
On departure from slc, passing 8000 ft MSL (4000 ft AGL), 250 KIAS, got compressor stalls from right (#2) engine (B737-300). As per checklist, retarded throttle and disengaged autothrottle. Declared emergency, advised flight attendants and passenger we would return to slc. Completed appropriate checklist and did precautionary engine shutdown due to continued compressor stalls at idle, no oil pressure or quantity and egt exceedance. Set up for visual approach to departure airport (slc) runway 16R as it was closest suitable field, WX was clear and good, runways long and dry. Slc TRACON did great job for us. Had fire crew check out aircraft. They noted nothing unusual or dangerous, so we continued taxi to gate after verifying brake cooling data.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B737-300 CREW, DEPARTING SLC, EXPERIENCED #2 ENG PROBS AND SHUT IT DOWN, RETURNING TO SLC.
Narrative: ON DEP FROM SLC, PASSING 8000 FT MSL (4000 FT AGL), 250 KIAS, GOT COMPRESSOR STALLS FROM R (#2) ENG (B737-300). AS PER CHKLIST, RETARDED THROTTLE AND DISENGAGED AUTOTHROTTLE. DECLARED EMER, ADVISED FLT ATTENDANTS AND PAX WE WOULD RETURN TO SLC. COMPLETED APPROPRIATE CHKLIST AND DID PRECAUTIONARY ENG SHUTDOWN DUE TO CONTINUED COMPRESSOR STALLS AT IDLE, NO OIL PRESSURE OR QUANTITY AND EGT EXCEEDANCE. SET UP FOR VISUAL APCH TO DEP ARPT (SLC) RWY 16R AS IT WAS CLOSEST SUITABLE FIELD, WX WAS CLR AND GOOD, RWYS LONG AND DRY. SLC TRACON DID GREAT JOB FOR US. HAD FIRE CREW CHK OUT ACFT. THEY NOTED NOTHING UNUSUAL OR DANGEROUS, SO WE CONTINUED TAXI TO GATE AFTER VERIFYING BRAKE COOLING DATA.
