Narrative:
After departing sus, we received numerous heading changes from st louis departure. They then cleared us to the csx VOR for the published departure (cards 6, bdf transition). Our FMS recognized our position in relation to the csx VOR and had already progressed to the next fix on the departure. So when we entered 'direct to,' the FMS directed us to csx 40, the 40 DME and 010 degree radial from csx. ATC alerted us of our position and gave us vectors back to the csx VOR.
