Narrative:
Departed sdl with a student in a PA32 on a final IFR check ride, direction 270 degrees. We were in contact with phx approach, but I decided to return to sdl because the student forgot to bring an IFR 'hood.' student called sdl tower after repos point 'pv mall.' we were instructed to fly to rawhide, which is nonstandard for the traffic situation. The student ignored this instruction and entered r-hand downwind runway 27. Then, I took over controls of the aircraft and reported our position to tower. The controller threatened with 'possible pilot deviation.' I took over controls quite late to be able to show the student the possibility of creating a hazardous situation by not following ATC instructions, to give him a chance of correcting his navigation error, and because I had both other aircraft in the control zone in sight, being a departing bizjet and company archer traffic in the pattern. I judged that the situation was not dangerous at any given moment in time.

Title: PA32 TRAINEE ON A FINAL INST RATING SCHOOL CHK RIDE, ENTERED TFC PATTERN CONTRARY TO TWR INSTRUCTIONS. INSTRUCTOR PLT TOOK OVER CTLS AND RPTED THEIR ACTUAL POS TO THE TWR. THE CTLR WAS UPSET WITH THE DISREGARD FOR HIS INSTRUCTIONS AND THREATENED PLTDEV ACTION.

I JUDGED THAT THE SIT WAS NOT DANGEROUS AT ANY GIVEN MOMENT IN TIME.
