Narrative:
First officer was flying and I (captain) was working as PNF. We were on a left downwind expecting a visual approach to runway 19R to mci. At about a 45 degree angle, we were given a 330 degree heading. I reported airport in sight and traffic in sight at 9 O'clock position. This traffic was an air carrier Y B737. I believe approach responded by saying that this traffic was on approach to the parallel runway (19L). We were then given a 280 degree heading and cleared for a visual approach to runway 19R and to maintain visual separation with that traffic. First officer continued descent and began to turn towards runway 19R. Shortly after this, we heard air carrier Z pilot say that he had us in sight. Controller told him to maintain visual separation with our MD80. Just as we were about to roll out on final for runway 19R behind air carrier Y (who was landing on runway 19R), we got a TA on TCASII, -300 ft and very close to the left. First officer stopped descent and rolled level on a 210 degree heading. I looked behind and left of my aircraft and saw air carrier Z, a DC9, banking steeply to the left and away from us. Estimate 1/4 mi from my airplane. At this point air carrier Z was almost on runway 19R centerline. I believe he overshot his turn to final for runway 19L. Controller had informed us earlier that air carrier Z had us in sight and would maintain separation. He must have lost sight of us, or he was looking at the B737 ahead of us. Nothing was said over the radio by anyone involved.

Title: MD80 FO TURNING FINAL WHEN TCASII WARNS OF ANOTHER ACFT NEAR AND LEVELS OUT FROM DSCNT. AT THE SAME TIME THE CAPT LOOKS TO L AND OBSERVES A DC9 IN A STEEP BANK TURNING AWAY FROM THEIR ACFT.
Narrative: FO WAS FLYING AND I (CAPT) WAS WORKING AS PNF. WE WERE ON A L DOWNWIND EXPECTING A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 19R TO MCI. AT ABOUT A 45 DEG ANGLE, WE WERE GIVEN A 330 DEG HDG. I RPTED ARPT IN SIGHT AND TFC IN SIGHT AT 9 O'CLOCK POS. THIS TFC WAS AN ACR Y B737. I BELIEVE APCH RESPONDED BY SAYING THAT THIS TFC WAS ON APCH TO THE PARALLEL RWY (19L). WE WERE THEN GIVEN A 280 DEG HDG AND CLRED FOR A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 19R AND TO MAINTAIN VISUAL SEPARATION WITH THAT TFC. FO CONTINUED DSCNT AND BEGAN TO TURN TOWARDS RWY 19R. SHORTLY AFTER THIS, WE HEARD ACR Z PLT SAY THAT HE HAD US IN SIGHT. CTLR TOLD HIM TO MAINTAIN VISUAL SEPARATION WITH OUR MD80. JUST AS WE WERE ABOUT TO ROLL OUT ON FINAL FOR RWY 19R BEHIND ACR Y (WHO WAS LNDG ON RWY 19R), WE GOT A TA ON TCASII, -300 FT AND VERY CLOSE TO THE L. FO STOPPED DSCNT AND ROLLED LEVEL ON A 210 DEG HDG. I LOOKED BEHIND AND L OF MY ACFT AND SAW ACR Z, A DC9, BANKING STEEPLY TO THE L AND AWAY FROM US. ESTIMATE 1/4 MI FROM MY AIRPLANE. AT THIS POINT ACR Z WAS ALMOST ON RWY 19R CTRLINE. I BELIEVE HE OVERSHOT HIS TURN TO FINAL FOR RWY 19L. CTLR HAD INFORMED US EARLIER THAT ACR Z HAD US IN SIGHT AND WOULD MAINTAIN SEPARATION. HE MUST HAVE LOST SIGHT OF US, OR HE WAS LOOKING AT THE B737 AHEAD OF US. NOTHING WAS SAID OVER THE RADIO BY ANYONE INVOLVED.
