Narrative:
Cleared for visual approach to wrong runway. Approaching ord airspace, the first approach controller assigned runway 22R, to hold short of runway 27R. When handed off to second and final approach controller, we were assigned runway 27R, and repeated this. We were given a 090 degree heading at 4000 ft and instructed to report runway in sight. This course altitude seemed normal to us, as this put us O the right downwind for runway 27R. We immediately reported the runway in sight and again were cleared for the visual runway 27R, which again was repeated to controller. As we were joining an approximately 5 mi final (very tightly spaced) the controller assigned us an immediate right turn to a heading of 360 degree and informed us we were supposed to land on runway 22R. The next airplane in sequence for runway 27R was given a cancellation of their approach clearance, but no TCAS warning appeared on our screens. We were then cleared for the visual approach to runway 22R. The second approach and the landing were uneventful.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CL65 FLC CHALLENGED BY C90 WHEN OBSERVED TURNING TO ANOTHER RWY AND IN POTENTIAL CONFLICT WITH ANOTHER ACFT.
Narrative: CLRED FOR VISUAL APCH TO WRONG RWY. APCHING ORD AIRSPACE, THE FIRST APCH CTLR ASSIGNED RWY 22R, TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 27R. WHEN HANDED OFF TO SECOND AND FINAL APCH CTLR, WE WERE ASSIGNED RWY 27R, AND REPEATED THIS. WE WERE GIVEN A 090 DEG HEADING AT 4000 FT AND INSTRUCTED TO RPT RWY IN SIGHT. THIS COURSE ALT SEEMED NORMAL TO US, AS THIS PUT US O THE RIGHT DOWNWIND FOR RWY 27R. WE IMMEDIATELY RPTED THE RWY IN SIGHT AND AGAIN WERE CLRED FOR THE VISUAL RWY 27R, WHICH AGAIN WAS REPEATED TO CTLR. AS WE WERE JOINING AN APPROX 5 MI FINAL (VERY TIGHTLY SPACED) THE CTLR ASSIGNED US AN IMMEDIATE RIGHT TURN TO A HEADING OF 360 DEG AND INFORMED US WE WERE SUPPOSED TO LAND ON RWY 22R. THE NEXT AIRPLANE IN SEQUENCE FOR RWY 27R WAS GIVEN A CANCELLATION OF THEIR APCH CLRNC, BUT NO TCAS WARNING APPEARED ON OUR SCREENS. WE WERE THEN CLRED FOR THE VISUAL APCH TO RWY 22R. THE SECOND APCH AND THE LNDG WERE UNEVENTFUL.
