Narrative:
Climbing out after departing cincinnati covington (cvg) I engaged the autoplt in the climb. Cincinnati approach handed me off to indianapolis center who then cleared me to 16000 ft. Which is the altitude filed in then usual canned flight plan I fly everyday. This morning however, I requested 14000 ft as a final and the request was granted by ATC. With the airplane climbing at 1000 ft FPM, I began filling out some paperwork. Engrossed with my paperwork, I failed to notice when I passed through 14000 ft until ATC called me to confirm my clearance as I was passing 14700 ft. My preoccupation with paperwork caused me to climb thru my assigned altitude. The primary reason for this error was inattention and a lapse in situational awareness on my part. A contributing factor is that the altitude alerter either does not work or this model has no aural warning function and consequently, I received no 'reminders' from the airplane. Since this event I had committed to doing nothing except fly the airplane until established in cruise and then only after triple checking that all systems are operating normally. Company RADI0 calls and paperwork can wait.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: SA227 CARGO PLT OVERSHOT HIS FILED, AND CLRED, CRUISE ALT DUE TO DISTRACTION OF HIS SINGLE PLT TASKS DURING CLIMB.
Narrative: CLIMBING OUT AFTER DEPARTING CINCINNATI COVINGTON (CVG) I ENGAGED THE AUTOPLT IN THE CLIMB. CINCINNATI APCH HANDED ME OFF TO INDIANAPOLIS CTR WHO THEN CLRED ME TO 16000 FT. WHICH IS THE ALT FILED IN THEN USUAL CANNED FLT PLAN I FLY EVERYDAY. THIS MORNING HOWEVER, I REQUESTED 14000 FT AS A FINAL AND THE REQUEST WAS GRANTED BY ATC. WITH THE AIRPLANE CLIMBING AT 1000 FT FPM, I BEGAN FILLING OUT SOME PAPERWORK. ENGROSSED WITH MY PAPERWORK, I FAILED TO NOTICE WHEN I PASSED THROUGH 14000 FT UNTIL ATC CALLED ME TO CONFIRM MY CLRNC AS I WAS PASSING 14700 FT. MY PREOCCUPATION WITH PAPERWORK CAUSED ME TO CLIMB THRU MY ASSIGNED ALT. THE PRIMARY REASON FOR THIS ERROR WAS INATTENTION AND A LAPSE IN SITUATIONAL AWARENESS ON MY PART. A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR IS THAT THE ALT ALERTER EITHER DOES NOT WORK OR THIS MODEL HAS NO AURAL WARNING FUNCTION AND CONSEQUENTLY, I RECEIVED NO 'REMINDERS' FROM THE AIRPLANE. SINCE THIS EVENT I HAD COMMITTED TO DOING NOTHING EXCEPT FLY THE AIRPLANE UNTIL ESTABLISHED IN CRUISE AND THEN ONLY AFTER TRIPLE CHKING THAT ALL SYSTEMS ARE OPERATING NORMALLY. COMPANY RADI0 CALLS AND PAPERWORK CAN WAIT.
