Narrative:
Taxied to runway 23 on taxiway H. When I turned right onto taxiway Q, I saw a hold line located close to the taxiway H/Q intersection. I did not think this hold line was meant for aircraft using runway 23 full length for the following reasons: 1) it was close to taxiway H and I had at least a few hundred yards of taxiway that paralleled runway 23 before making a 90 degree left turn to the runway approach end. I expected the hold line to be after taxiway Q made the 90 degree left turn. 2) there was no runway sign near or close to the hold line. When I didn't see another hold line ahead, I stopped the aircraft while still parallel to the runway on taxiway Q. Tower then said I had gone past the hold line. After an aircraft landed on runway 23, I was cleared for takeoff runway 23 full length. I should have asked tower if the hold line I saw was meant for me before proceeding. We were busy briefing the departure, tps engine fail specific procedures for runway 23, and trying to get the current winds.

Title: AN ACR CROSSES THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 23 AT CYYZ WITHOUT CLRNC. COMPLAINS THAT IT IS IN AN ILLOGICAL PLACE.
Narrative: TAXIED TO RWY 23 ON TXWY H. WHEN I TURNED R ONTO TXWY Q, I SAW A HOLD LINE LOCATED CLOSE TO THE TXWY H/Q INTXN. I DID NOT THINK THIS HOLD LINE WAS MEANT FOR ACFT USING RWY 23 FULL LENGTH FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS: 1) IT WAS CLOSE TO TXWY H AND I HAD AT LEAST A FEW HUNDRED YARDS OF TXWY THAT PARALLELED RWY 23 BEFORE MAKING A 90 DEG L TURN TO THE RWY APCH END. I EXPECTED THE HOLD LINE TO BE AFTER TXWY Q MADE THE 90 DEG L TURN. 2) THERE WAS NO RWY SIGN NEAR OR CLOSE TO THE HOLD LINE. WHEN I DIDN'T SEE ANOTHER HOLD LINE AHEAD, I STOPPED THE ACFT WHILE STILL PARALLEL TO THE RWY ON TXWY Q. TWR THEN SAID I HAD GONE PAST THE HOLD LINE. AFTER AN ACFT LANDED ON RWY 23, I WAS CLRED FOR TKOF RWY 23 FULL LENGTH. I SHOULD HAVE ASKED TWR IF THE HOLD LINE I SAW WAS MEANT FOR ME BEFORE PROCEEDING. WE WERE BUSY BRIEFING THE DEP, TPS ENG FAIL SPECIFIC PROCS FOR RWY 23, AND TRYING TO GET THE CURRENT WINDS.
