Narrative:
We landed runway 19 at sdf and during the landing roll while I was busy topping the aircraft, tower told us to do 180 degrees on runway 19. First officer acknowledged with 'roger,' and said nothing to me. I told tower we could make a left turn onto taxiway and the tower said no, that a 180 degree taxi back on runway 19 was preferred. I said 'roger, taxi north on 19.' as we got close to intersection of runway 19 and 29 (landing traffic) tower said, 'are you holding short?' I stopped and said affirmative. Tower then told aircraft on final to go around, probably not knowing my exact location at intersection. Tower then cleared us to cross 19 and 29 to the ramp and on to the gate at sdf. I asked tower if there was a problem and he said no; however, we were told immediately after landing to hold short. The first officer did not acknowledged that call or relay the hold short to me. I feel it was miscom on both our part and tower during the landing roll when we are busy stopping the aircraft. No incident occurred. Other aircraft went around and circled and landed on 29 normally. Perhaps hold short messages and 180 degree turns on an active runway should be communicated after the aircraft comes to a stop.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE COMPLIED WITH ATC CLRNC TO HOLD SHORT OF CROSSING RWY AFTER LNDG.
Narrative: WE LANDED RWY 19 AT SDF AND DURING THE LNDG ROLL WHILE I WAS BUSY TOPPING THE ACFT, TWR TOLD US TO DO 180 DEGS ON RWY 19. F/O ACKNOWLEDGED WITH 'ROGER,' AND SAID NOTHING TO ME. I TOLD TWR WE COULD MAKE A LEFT TURN ONTO TXWY AND THE TWR SAID NO, THAT A 180 DEG TAXI BACK ON RWY 19 WAS PREFERRED. I SAID 'ROGER, TAXI N ON 19.' AS WE GOT CLOSE TO INTXN OF RWY 19 AND 29 (LNDG TFC) TWR SAID, 'ARE YOU HOLDING SHORT?' I STOPPED AND SAID AFFIRMATIVE. TWR THEN TOLD ACFT ON FINAL TO GO AROUND, PROBABLY NOT KNOWING MY EXACT LOCATION AT INTXN. TWR THEN CLRED US TO CROSS 19 AND 29 TO THE RAMP AND ON TO THE GATE AT SDF. I ASKED TWR IF THERE WAS A PROB AND HE SAID NO; HOWEVER, WE WERE TOLD IMMEDIATELY AFTER LNDG TO HOLD SHORT. THE F/O DID NOT ACKNOWLEDGED THAT CALL OR RELAY THE HOLD SHORT TO ME. I FEEL IT WAS MISCOM ON BOTH OUR PART AND TWR DURING THE LNDG ROLL WHEN WE ARE BUSY STOPPING THE ACFT. NO INCIDENT OCCURRED. OTHER ACFT WENT AROUND AND CIRCLED AND LANDED ON 29 NORMALLY. PERHAPS HOLD SHORT MESSAGES AND 180 DEG TURNS ON AN ACTIVE RWY SHOULD BE COMMUNICATED AFTER THE ACFT COMES TO A STOP.
