Narrative:
On final approach, there was significant static on tower frequency 135.0. This has been a constant problem over the past few weeks. Over the past few weeks I have mentioned this to the tower whenever I noticed the same static. This severely degrades the communication between the tower and all aircraft on the frequency. The communication continues to be degraded, there may be an accident because of misunderstood or blocked communication on this frequency. Tower told us today that nothing is being done about this problem. Let's get a new frequency or fix the problem before someone gets hurt. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter advised that the tower frequency has been changed, resolving the problem. Additional information: a dtw specialist advised the interference resulted from a transmitting station in canada. Unable to obtain resolution from the transmitting station organization, the FAA changed the local control frequency.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: DC9 FLC CONCERNED WITH DTW ATCT LCL CTL FREQ INTERFERENCE.
Narrative: ON FINAL APCH, THERE WAS SIGNIFICANT STATIC ON TWR FREQ 135.0. THIS HAS BEEN A CONSTANT PROB OVER THE PAST FEW WKS. OVER THE PAST FEW WKS I HAVE MENTIONED THIS TO THE TWR WHENEVER I NOTICED THE SAME STATIC. THIS SEVERELY DEGRADES THE COM BTWN THE TWR AND ALL ACFT ON THE FREQ. THE COM CONTINUES TO BE DEGRADED, THERE MAY BE AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE OF MISUNDERSTOOD OR BLOCKED COM ON THIS FREQ. TWR TOLD US TODAY THAT NOTHING IS BEING DONE ABOUT THIS PROB. LET'S GET A NEW FREQ OR FIX THE PROB BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR ADVISED THAT THE TWR FREQ HAS BEEN CHANGED, RESOLVING THE PROB. ADDITIONAL INFO: A DTW SPECIALIST ADVISED THE INTERFERENCE RESULTED FROM A XMITTING STATION IN CANADA. UNABLE TO OBTAIN RESOLUTION FROM THE XMITTING STATION ORGANIZATION, THE FAA CHANGED THE LCL CTL FREQ.
