Narrative:
Aircraft X departed iad for hpn. Shortly after departure, aircraft X returned to iad for maintenance. After arrival, aircraft X was rereleased and redispatched with a different aircraft. Aircraft X was filed iad..mrb.V501.hgr.V377.har..etx... Shortly after second departure of aircraft X, got a call from the aircraft asking me to call iad departure. Iad departure said aircraft X was flying mrb.V39.etx which was not their clearance. The crew stated they were given mrb.V39.etx on their pre departure clearance and called iad tower to confirm clearance which was confirmed. Iad tower stated that mrb.V39.etx never came up on aircraft X's pre departure clearance and that the history showed iad..mrb.V501.hgr.V377.etc. In addition, iad tower stated there were several aircraft X, 2 departures and 1 arrival. They also stated at one time there were 2 aircraft X, 1 departure and 1 arrival. I stated to iad tower that would coincide with the return to field.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: JS41 CREW DEPARTED IAD BUT RETURNED SHORTLY AFTER TKOF WITH A MECHANICAL PROB. CREW DEPARTED WITH DIFFERENT ACFT AND BELIEVED THEY HAD A DIFFERENT ATC CLRNC.
Narrative: ACFT X DEPARTED IAD FOR HPN. SHORTLY AFTER DEP, ACFT X RETURNED TO IAD FOR MAINT. AFTER ARR, ACFT X WAS RERELEASED AND REDISPATCHED WITH A DIFFERENT ACFT. ACFT X WAS FILED IAD..MRB.V501.HGR.V377.HAR..ETX... SHORTLY AFTER SECOND DEP OF ACFT X, GOT A CALL FROM THE ACFT ASKING ME TO CALL IAD DEP. IAD DEP SAID ACFT X WAS FLYING MRB.V39.ETX WHICH WAS NOT THEIR CLRNC. THE CREW STATED THEY WERE GIVEN MRB.V39.ETX ON THEIR PDC AND CALLED IAD TWR TO CONFIRM CLRNC WHICH WAS CONFIRMED. IAD TWR STATED THAT MRB.V39.ETX NEVER CAME UP ON ACFT X'S PDC AND THAT THE HISTORY SHOWED IAD..MRB.V501.HGR.V377.ETC. IN ADDITION, IAD TWR STATED THERE WERE SEVERAL ACFT X, 2 DEPS AND 1 ARR. THEY ALSO STATED AT ONE TIME THERE WERE 2 ACFT X, 1 DEP AND 1 ARR. I STATED TO IAD TWR THAT WOULD COINCIDE WITH THE RETURN TO FIELD.
