Narrative:
Pvd operations closed door early XA49 local. We taxied out using tower frequency for advisory traffic. We called bridgeport FSS for IFR release and was advised that they were unable to get clearance. Tried ZBW and unable to raise them. We consulted manual and departed VFR and contacted ZBW 30 seconds after takeoff and was given an IFR squawk and clearance to ord. While at cruise in ZOB airspace we were asked to call ZBW upon arrival ord. We called and had a nice conversation with a controller who asked if in the future, we could wait for an IFR release prior to departure because of the heightened awareness for security. I appreciated the controller's demeanor and said I would pass his comments along.
