Narrative:

After aborting a flight and returning to ZZZZ, company obtained a ferry flight permit to return to home base empty. This would allow the gear that would not retract to remain down/locked the entire flight. This permit forbade flight into icing conditions. Since usually cold precipitation had moved into the seattle area we observed the WX closely and even delayed the flight 1 more day to see how the WX turned out. The decision was made to conduct the flight VMC until arriving in sea then check current conditions and PIREPS. After speaking with company, and allowing maintenance to speak to the repair facility we departed for sea. While completing the company paperwork in route I discovered that the repair facility had not been given the maintenance log to sign off as was required by the ferry permit. I believe our focus on WX dominated our attention and we overlooked the sign off requirement. Also the lack of repetition of this task (we rarely ferry aircraft). I think if maintenance had conveyed this requirement to the repair station there would have been less chance for error. Also company could have requested a copy of the sign off to verify it had been done correctly, rather than leaving the flight crew alone in an unfamiliar situation. We realize we made an error but some assistance would have been appreciated.

Title: A SMALL LOW WING TRANSPORT WAS DISPATCHED ON A MAINT FERRY IN NON COMPLIANCE WITHOUT THE REQUIRED ACFT INSPECTION AND LOGBOOK ENTRY.

Narrative: AFTER ABORTING A FLT AND RETURNING TO ZZZZ, COMPANY OBTAINED A FERRY FLT PERMIT TO RETURN TO HOME BASE EMPTY. THIS WOULD ALLOW THE GEAR THAT WOULD NOT RETRACT TO REMAIN DOWN/LOCKED THE ENTIRE FLT. THIS PERMIT FORBADE FLT INTO ICING CONDITIONS. SINCE USUALLY COLD PRECIPITATION HAD MOVED INTO THE SEATTLE AREA WE OBSERVED THE WX CLOSELY AND EVEN DELAYED THE FLT 1 MORE DAY TO SEE HOW THE WX TURNED OUT. THE DECISION WAS MADE TO CONDUCT THE FLT VMC UNTIL ARRIVING IN SEA THEN CHK CURRENT CONDITIONS AND PIREPS. AFTER SPEAKING WITH COMPANY, AND ALLOWING MAINT TO SPEAK TO THE REPAIR FACILITY WE DEPARTED FOR SEA. WHILE COMPLETING THE COMPANY PAPERWORK IN RTE I DISCOVERED THAT THE REPAIR FACILITY HAD NOT BEEN GIVEN THE MAINT LOG TO SIGN OFF AS WAS REQUIRED BY THE FERRY PERMIT. I BELIEVE OUR FOCUS ON WX DOMINATED OUR ATTN AND WE OVERLOOKED THE SIGN OFF REQUIREMENT. ALSO THE LACK OF REPETITION OF THIS TASK (WE RARELY FERRY ACFT). I THINK IF MAINT HAD CONVEYED THIS REQUIREMENT TO THE REPAIR STATION THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN LESS CHANCE FOR ERROR. ALSO COMPANY COULD HAVE REQUESTED A COPY OF THE SIGN OFF TO VERIFY IT HAD BEEN DONE CORRECTLY, RATHER THAN LEAVING THE FLC ALONE IN AN UNFAMILIAR SIT. WE REALIZE WE MADE AN ERROR BUT SOME ASSISTANCE WOULD HAVE BEEN APPRECIATED.
