Narrative:
Upon reaching 31000 ft, smelled smoke. Contacted lead flight attendant to ask if there was smoke in cabin. Odor subsided in cockpit. Mins later smoke was pouring out of captain's side panel and floor. Both pilots donn oxygen masks and smoke goggles. Declared emergency. Requested diversion to cle. Flight attendant notified of diversion and company notified. Told ATC fuel and number of passenger onboard. At the same time accomplished immediate action items on QRH, then continued QRH procedures. Smoke continued until landing. Safe landing. Smoke subsided on rollout. Cleared runway. No further smoke or fire indicated. Advised passenger to remain seated. Taxied to gate and deplaned passenger. No crew or passenger injuries. Supplemental information from acn 538507: upon reaching 31000 ft, the captain smelled smoke, contacted lead flight attendant to ask if they smelled smoke or see anything in cabin. Odor subsided, a few mins later captain indicated/observed smoke pouring from area by his left knee. We both donned smoke goggles and oxygen masks. With direction from captain, declared emergency/mayday and diverted to cle. Flight attendants notified of time remaining, nature of emergency, instructions, etc, company and operations in cle notified. ATC advised of number of passenger and fuel onboard. While this was going on, we accomplished emergency checklists and completed QRH items. Smoke continued until landing. Safe landing and smoke subsided on rollout, cleared runway and after further observations by crew and fire personnel, taxied and deplaned passenger at gate. No crew or passenger injured. Possible cause: older wiring in an older B757 than most.
